The book of Numbers 23:23 is a popular verse we often use which says, “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel:
While it was a reality and worked for the people of Israel that time, it should also be a reality and work for us presently as believers and Children of God.
That is to say that there should be no enchantment or divination against us and our families. However, before that statement was made, we need to understand the background and settings of what transpired before the statement was made.
We can see that in the book of Numbers 22 and 23 which gave us the story of what happened. When the children of Israel came out of Egypt and pitched in the plains of Moab on this side Jordan by Jericho.
Now, Balak the son of Zippor, was the King of Moab that time, having seen and heard all that Israel had done to the Amorites.
He and Moab was exceedingly afraid of the people of Israel because they were many, and Moab was sick with dread because of the children of Israel.
As a result, he sent messengers to Balaam the son of Beor at Pethor, which is near the River in the land of the sons of his people, to call him, saying: “Look, a people has come from Egypt. See, they cover the face of the earth, and are settling next to me!
“Therefore please come at once, curse this people for me, for they are too mighty for me. Perhaps I shall be able to defeat them and drive them out of the land, for I know that he whom you bless is blessed, and he whom you curse is cursed.”
So the elders of Moab and the elders of Midian departed with the diviner’s fee in their hand, and they came to Balaam and spoke to him the words of Balak.
Please read what happened next because Balam, for accepting Balak hiring him to come and curse Israel then, he incurred God’s anger because as he went, the Angel of the LORD took His stand in the way as an adversary against him.
In Numbers 22:33, the angel of the Lord told Balam that surely He would have killed him but let the donkey live if the donkey had not turned aside from him.
In the same way, I wish to assure you that the angel of the Lord shall stand on the way of any sorcerer, native doctors or any spiritualist hired to curse you or your family in Jesus name.
In Numbers 23:23, Balam made a profound statement when he started blessing Israel instead of cursing them. He said, “How shall I curse whom God has not cursed? And how shall I denounce whom the LORD has not denounced?
In Numbers 23 verses 1, 14, 29 we can see the numbers of animals Balak sacrificed just to curse Israel. From the record, Balak built seven altars for me here, and prepare for me here seven bulls and seven rams on the instruction of Balam.
That is to say, Balak sacrificed seven bulls and seven rams three times totaling twenty-one bulls and twenty-one rams which amounted to forty-two animals just to curse Israel.
What I am trying to bring out is that our adversaries are willing or sacrificing heavily just to harm us, even to eliminate us from the face of the earth while some of us are so tightfisted to place worth sacrifices on the godly altars of God.
Despite Balak fluffing all the condition of Balam, God prevented him from placing curses on Israel. In Numbers 13:20 Balam told Balak saying, “Behold, I have received a command to bless; He has blessed, and I cannot reverse it.
In the same way, God will not allow any sorcerer, native doctors or spiritualist hired to curse us to succeed. However, you must be sure that you don’t merit a curse because the book of Proverbs 26:2 said “As the bird by wandering, as the swallow by flying, so the curse causeless shall not come.
End of the part one, in part 2,we shall be looking at the reasons Balam told Balak that “Surely there is no enchantment against Jacob, neither is there any divination against Israel. Shalom!
